São Filipe is the capital of the island of Fogo, one of the 9 inhabited islands of the Republic of Cabo Verde. This archipelago is located about 1500 km south of the Canary Islands and 500 km west of Senegal.

Since it became independent of the Portuguese colonial dominion in 1975, Cabo Verde is an African nation with a democratic constitution and several opposing political parties.

Fogo (engl. fire) belongs to the Sotavento (engl. leeward) - islands. Throughout the year the wind is blowing from the north-east. The whole island is a volcano with a crater at 1400m height, the Cha das Caldeiras. In this crater another volcano has been formed, the Pico do Fogo. With an altitude of 2829 m, it is the highest point of Cabo Verde.

The impressive landscape of Cha das Caldeiras is a protected area, known as Parque Natural do Fogo

The north-eastern part of the island above the village of Mosteiros has nearly a tropical climate due to the humidity of the trade-winds, while the hot and dry south-west allows only poor vegetation.

Of crucial importance is the quantity of rain that falls in August, September and October. If it is too low, the farmers and their families, especially in the middle and southern parts of the island, face severe problems, which can only be alleviated by public resources or international aid programs.

São Filipe is one of the warmest places of Cabo Verde. The highest temperature varies from 28°C in January to 32°C in September, the lowest temperature from 20°C in February to 25°C in August. Seasons in the European way don’t exist
