The restaurant and café le bistro serves as a meeting point for visitors as well as inhabitants of São Filipe. The German owner Renate has known São Filipe and the island of Fogo for many years. Renate also speaks English and takes care oft her guests along with her staff.

The view from the terrace over the roofs of the city towards the island of Brava is marvellous, especially at sunset.

Compared to the market behind townhall, life is very calm at the  sucupira, the clothing market.

Dja’r Fogo (creole: island of Fogo) is a projekt by Agnelo Vieira de Andrade, who is involved in the conservation and restauration of the historic buildings of São Filipe. He provides professional explanations in Portuguese, English and French.

The Casa da Memoria was founded and is run by Monique Widmer. It is not only a museum on the history of São Filipe (open Wed, Thu, Fri 10.00 - 12.00 a.m.), but a place, where people become familiar with its history in a very vivid way.

The catholic church of the Bila Baxo

A private cemetery on the other side of the valley. It was founded by four rich local families.

In the afternoon the city is crowded by students from the high school, the liceu, where uniforms are obligatory. As the liceu is the only highschool on Fogo,  “school busses” carry the students all over the island.

The local office of the Caboverdian airline TACV. Here you can reconfirm your domestic flights, change the time of departure, if you want to stay a little bit longer, or make sure that your flight will indeed depart. Between December and March it may happen that there is so much dust in the air that flights must be cancelled due to the weather conditions.This phenomenon is called bruma secca.

Nearby you will find the office of the shipping company Agenamar, where you can find out the latest news about the ferryboat connections to Brava or Praia.

Restaurants in the historic centre of São Filipe

At the le bistro you get typical Caboverdian food, and also pasta and pizza. You can find Lobster at reasonable prices (about 15 Euro) at seafood. Other good restaurants are the Tropical, the Calerom and the Eclipse near hotel Xaguate

 

The nightlife of São Filipe

You can listen to live music by a local band on Saturdays at the Tropical (beginning 11.00 p.m.). Sometimes there is live-music at the Calerom too.

And finally there is dancing at the discotheque Escalada till early morning.
